About Becoming Catholic at St. Michael the Archangel Parish
Jesus calls each of us into a life of discipleship—a journey of knowing Him,
following Him, and sharing His love with others. The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA)
is the process through which adults learn about the Catholic faith and discern God’s invitation
to become part of the Catholic Church.
Whether you have never been baptized, were baptized in another Christian tradition, or are a baptized Catholic seeking to complete your Sacraments, OCIA provides a welcoming environment to ask questions, grow in faith, and discover what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ.
If you have been attending Mass with family or friends, or are considering becoming Catholic after years away from the Church, we are honored that you are here. The Catholic Church welcomes all who seek a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. The journey to becoming Catholic is not simply about learning facts—it is about encountering Christ, growing in faith, and becoming part of a parish family. What is OCIA?
The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is the process through which adults prepare to become Catholic or to complete their Sacraments of Initiation. Formerly known as RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), the name was changed to better reflect that it is a process of spiritual formation rather than simply a program or class.
OCIA is designed for:
- Adults who have never been baptized.
- Christians baptized in another Christian tradition who wish to become Catholic.
- Baptized Catholics who have not yet received First Holy Communion and/or Confirmation.
- Anyone who simply wants to learn more about the Catholic faith with no obligation to join the Church.
What Happens During OCIA?
OCIA is a journey of faith that includes:
- Learning about Catholic beliefs and teachings.
- Studying Sacred Scripture.
- Exploring prayer and the Sacraments.
- Asking questions in a welcoming, respectful environment.
- Participating in parish life and worship.
- Growing in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
There is never pressure to become Catholic. Each person is invited to move forward at their own pace as they discern God’s call.
The Process
1. Inquiry
This is an informal time to ask questions, meet members of the parish, and learn about the Catholic faith. There is no commitment required.
2. Catechumenate
During this period, participants receive more in-depth formation in Scripture, Catholic teaching, prayer, and Christian living while becoming more involved in the life of the parish.
3. Purification and Enlightenment
Usually celebrated during the season of Lent, this period is one of prayer, reflection, and spiritual preparation as participants prepare to receive the Sacraments.
4. Celebration of the Sacraments
At the Easter Vigil Mass, those entering the Church receive the Sacraments appropriate to their situation:
- The Unbaptized receive Baptism, Confirmation, and First Holy Communion.
- Those Already Baptized in Another Christian Tradition are received into full communion with the Catholic Church, make a Profession of Faith, receive Confirmation, and receive Holy Communion.
- Baptized Catholics who have not completed their initiation receive the Sacraments they are missing, usually Confirmation and Holy Communion.
5. Mystagogy
After Easter, the journey continues with ongoing formation, prayer, and participation in parish life as new Catholics deepen their understanding of the faith and their relationship with Christ.
Who Can Join?
OCIA is open to:
- Adults seeking Baptism.
- Christians from other denominations interested in becoming Catholic.
- Baptized Catholics who have not received Confirmation or First Holy Communion.
- Anyone who simply wants to learn more about the Catholic faith.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to become Catholic if I attend OCIA?
No. OCIA is a time of learning and discernment. There is no obligation to join the Church.
When do classes begin?
Our parish typically begins OCIA in the fall, but inquiries are welcome throughout the year.
Is there a cost?
No. There is no fee to participate in OCIA.
Can I participate if my spouse is Catholic?
Absolutely. Many people begin their journey because of a spouse, family member, or friend.

Welcome home. Whether you have been away from the Catholic Church for a few years or many decades, we are grateful that God has led you back to this moment. The fact that you are reading this is a sign that the Holy Spirit is at work in your heart.
Life’s journey often takes us down unexpected paths. Along the way, we may become disconnected from our faith, struggle with questions, experience hurt, or simply find ourselves busy with the demands of life. Yet through it all, God’s love remains constant. He never stops calling us, never stops seeking us, and never stops inviting us into a deeper relationship with Him.
At St. Michael Parish, we want you to know that you are welcome here. You do not need to have all the answers. You do not need to have everything figured out. You simply need to take the next step.
Jesus’ final command to His disciples was clear: “Go therefore and make disciples.” As members of His Church, we are all called not only to believe in Him but to follow Him as disciples. Discipleship is a lifelong journey of growing closer to Christ, learning from Him, serving others, and sharing His love with the world.
Returning to the Church is not about looking backward; it is about moving forward. It is about rediscovering the beauty of the sacraments, the strength of prayer, the wisdom of Scripture, and the support of a faith-filled community. Most importantly, it is about encountering Jesus Christ, who knows you, loves you, and desires a personal relationship with you.
