The Sacrament of Reconciliation
The Sacrament of Reconciliation (also known as Confession or the Sacrament of Penance) is one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. Through this beautiful sacrament, we encounter the boundless mercy and forgiveness of Jesus Christ.
When we sin, our relationship with God and His Church is wounded. In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we confess our sins to a priest, who acts in the person of Christ (in persona Christi). Through the ministry of the Church, Christ forgives our sins, restores us to communion with Him, and fills us with the grace to live as faithful disciples.
As disciples of Jesus, we are continually called to conversion of heart. Reconciliation offers us the opportunity to experience God’s healing love, receive His mercy, and begin again with renewed peace and hope. Regular confession helps us grow spiritually, overcome sin, strengthen our relationship with Christ, and become more faithful witnesses of the Gospel.
How Do I Receive the Sacrament?
Receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation is simple:
- Examine your conscience by prayerfully reflecting on your thoughts, words, actions, and omissions since your last confession.
- Confess your sins honestly to the priest.
- Express your sorrow by praying an Act of Contrition.
- Receive absolution, as the priest extends God’s forgiveness in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
- Complete your penance, the prayer or action given by the priest to help strengthen your relationship with God.
Whether it has been a few months or many years since your last confession, you are always welcome. If you’re unsure what to do, simply let the priest know—he will gladly guide you through the sacrament.
