Holy Day Mass – Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary: August 15th, 2026

Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 15th at 5:00 pm (this year is not a Holy Day of Obligation – read below)

The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated every year on August 15 and is one of the Church’s most important Marian feasts. On this day, Catholics celebrate the belief that, at the end of her earthly life, Mary was assumed body and soul into the glory of Heaven. This teaching, known as the Dogma of the Assumption, was solemnly proclaimed by Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950, in the apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus. While Scripture does not explicitly describe the Assumption, the Church’s belief is rooted in Sacred Tradition and the constant faith of the early Christian community.

The Assumption points us toward the hope that awaits all who faithfully follow Christ. Because Mary was preserved from sin through the grace of God and remained faithful to His will, she now shares fully in the resurrection of her Son. Her Assumption is a sign of the resurrection promised to all believers and reminds us that our ultimate destiny is eternal life with God. Rather than focusing only on Mary’s privilege, the feast celebrates what God desires for each of us: to share forever in His heavenly glory.

Is it a Holy Day of Obligation?

Yes. In the United States, the Assumption is ordinarily a Holy Day of Obligation, meaning Catholics are required to participate in Mass.

However, there is an important exception. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has decreed that when August 15 falls on a Saturday or a Monday, the obligation to attend Mass is removed (abrogated). The feast is still celebrated liturgically as a solemnity, but Catholics are not required to attend Mass that day, though they are strongly encouraged to do so.

What happens in the Diocese of Grand Rapids when it falls on a Saturday?

The Diocese of Grand Rapids follows the norm established by the USCCB. Therefore, when the Assumption falls on a Saturday, there is no obligation to attend Mass. Parishes may still celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption with Masses, and the faithful are encouraged to participate, but attendance is voluntary rather than required. The Diocese has specifically noted that although the obligation is lifted, Catholics are encouraged to honor the day by attending Mass if possible.

For 2026, the Assumption falls on Saturday, August 15, so in the Diocese of Grand Rapids:

  • The Solemnity of the Assumption is celebrated.
  • It is not a Holy Day of Obligation.
  • The regular Sunday obligation remains for the following day, August 16.

This feast beautifully reminds us that Mary’s life points us always to Christ. As the first disciple and the Mother of the Church, she shows us the destiny God has prepared for those who faithfully say “yes” to His will.
