Lector

Jesus calls each of us to “Go and make disciples.” Whether through prayer, service, fellowship, learning, or worship, there is a place for you to grow in faith and help others encounter Christ. We invite you to get involved and discover where God is calling you to serve.

A Lector is a baptized Catholic who has been called to proclaim the Word of God during the Mass. Through this ministry, the lector gives voice to Sacred Scripture so that the faithful may hear God’s message and respond in faith. The lector proclaims the First and Second Readings, leads the Prayer of the Faithful when needed, and helps prepare the assembly to receive Christ in the Eucharist.

What Does a Lector Do?

A Lector serves by:

• Proclaiming the First and Second Readings at Mass.
• Leading the Prayer of the Faithful when a deacon is not present.
• Preparing prayerfully and practicing the assigned readings before Mass.
• Reading clearly, confidently, and reverently so that God’s Word is heard and understood.
• Arriving early to review the readings and ensure everything is prepared.

The lector does more than simply read words from a book. Through careful preparation and faithful proclamation, the lector becomes an instrument through whom God speaks to His people.

Why Is This Ministry Important?

The Liturgy of the Word is one of the two principal parts of the Mass, together with the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Before we receive Christ in Holy Communion, we first encounter Him through His Word.

A Lector helps the assembly:

• Hear and understand Sacred Scripture.
• Reflect on God’s message for their daily lives.
• Prepare their hearts to receive Jesus in the Eucharist.
• Grow in faith through attentive listening to the Word of God.

The Church teaches that Christ is truly present in His Word, just as He is truly present in the Eucharist. Because of this, the proclamation of Scripture deserves the same care, reverence, and preparation as every other part of the Sacred Liturgy.

Qualities of a Good Lector

A Lector should:

• Be a fully initiated Catholic living a life of faith.
• Have a love for Sacred Scripture.
• Speak clearly and confidently in public.
• Prepare prayerfully before proclaiming the readings.
• Demonstrate reverence, humility, and reliability.

The most effective lectors do not draw attention to themselves. Instead, they allow God’s Word to be the focus, proclaiming it with clarity, conviction, and faith.

A Ministry of Proclaiming God’s Word

Serving as a Lector is both a privilege and a responsibility. Through this ministry, God uses ordinary people to proclaim His extraordinary Word. Every reading has the power to comfort, challenge, encourage, and inspire those who hear it. A well-prepared lector helps the congregation encounter Christ through Sacred Scripture and invites them into a deeper relationship with Him.
